Overview:
The Hybrid Wilderness First Responder (H-WFR) course provides medical skills to individuals working or playing in a remote or wilderness setting. This course offers the skills and confidence needed to provide medical care when evacuation is hours or days away. The WFR includes short lectures, interactive labs, and realistic practice scenarios that train students to improvise with limited resources in remote environments. The course combines 20-30 hours of online coursework with five days of on-site training.
Subjects Covered:
Designed for the outdoor guide, Remote Site Team Lead or Military Team Lead, the H-WFR includes a range of introductory medical skills and topics, including patient assessment, lifting and moving patients, cold and heat emergencies, altitude, immersion, submersion, lightning, legal considerations, and more. Students also learn how to effectively manage basic wounds, infection, shock, head injuries, spinal injuries, respiratory and cardiac emergencies, abdominal pain, metabolic and allergic reactions, and altered mental states, for up to eight hours until a higher level of care can arrive. This course is designed to prepare the student in leading and managing a group of individuals who are not medically trained or have basic medical knowledge to assist them in managing a complex patient.
Pre Requisites: 18+ years or older.
Duration: 20-30 hours of distance learning through our Online LMS and five days on-site. Typical course schedule is 8am - 5pm with the potential for one evening scenario requirement.
Certifications: ECSI CPR/AED Health Care Provider (Professional) Certification and Remote Medical Training WFR.
Recertification Interval: Three years.

BREITENBUSH HOT SPRINGS RETREAT AND CONFERENCE CENTER

OVERVIEW
Located in Oregon, Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat and Conference Center is a remote forest sanctuary of timeless natural beauty on 154 acres surrounded by national forest. Blessed with abundant hot springs, a glacier-fed river, ancient forest and surrounding mountains, it is a place where you will disconnect from digital distraction and discover a deep personal connection with the natural world and with yourself.
LODGING AND MEALS
Once Registered, students will book their lodging with Breitenbush Hot Springs to include both room and board for the duration of the course. Meals are inclusive with any overnight stay; starting with dinner on your arrival day, three meals a day, then breakfast and lunch on the day of departure. Our meals are vegetarian, using almost 100% organic ingredients. Meals are served out of the Lodge at designated meal times.
TRANSPORTATION
Students are responsible for their own transportation. Breitenbush Hot Springs is about a 2 hour drive from Portland, OR, and best reached with a personal vehicle. For students flying in, there are car rentals available at the airport. You may also post in the Student Portal's Discussion Board before the course to coordinate carpools or shared rental vehicles with your classmates.
