This course combines 20-30 hours of online coursework with five days of in-person training to provide intermediate medical skills to individuals working or playing in remote environments. The Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification is considered the standard for professionals working as guides, outdoor educators, as well as recreational expedition medical personnel in remote areas. Through our hands-on and scenario-based approach, this course offers the skills and confidence needed to provide medical care when an evacuation is hours or days away.

The WFR covers legal considerations, patient assessment, lifting and moving patients, wilderness CPR, altitude, immersion, submersion, lightning, and altered mental states. The course curriculum also educates students on how to successfully manage shock, head injuries, wounds, infection, musculoskeletal and spinal injuries, respiratory and cardiac emergencies, abdominal pain, metabolic and allergic reactions, cold and heat emergencies, and more.

Course Format

The HWFR includes 4 weeks of online learning followed by 5 days of in-person training. The online curriculum is designed to be self guided.
