Our Virtual Learning Experience: What Our Hybrid Courses Have to Offer
Aug 08, 2025
In today's fast-paced world, finding time for professional development can be a challenge. We believe that world-class medical training should be accessible, flexible, and comprehensive. That’s why we’ve developed our hybrid learning model, combining the convenience of online education with the indispensable value of hands-on, in-person training. This approach allows you to learn the foundational knowledge at your own pace, so you can maximize your time practicing practical skills when we meet in person.
We currently offer two distinct hybrid courses designed to meet the needs of different outdoor professionals and enthusiasts.
The Hybrid Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
The WFR is the gold standard for outdoor leaders, guides, and anyone who spends significant time in remote environments. Our hybrid course respects your schedule without compromising on quality.
What it is: This course combines 20-30 hours of engaging online coursework with five intensive days of in-person training.
The Online Component: You will cover the essential anatomy, physiology, and pathology of wilderness emergencies through a self-paced curriculum. This includes video lectures, case studies, and quizzes that ensure you arrive at the practical session with a strong theoretical foundation.
The In-Person Session: This is where the learning comes to life. Over five days, our expert instructors will guide you through hands-on skills and realistic scenarios. You’ll practice patient assessments, splinting, wound care, and managing environmental emergencies in a supportive, scenario-based environment. This hands-on practice is critical for building the muscle memory and confidence needed to act effectively under pressure.
Who it’s for: Outdoor educators, guides, search and rescue personnel, and dedicated recreationalists seeking the skills to manage medical emergencies when evacuation is hours or days away.
The Hybrid Remote Emergency Medical Technician (HREMT™)
For those seeking a higher level of medical certification for professional work in the world’s most remote areas, our HREMT™ course offers an unparalleled educational experience.
What it is: This advanced course combines approximately 70 hours of self-guided online curriculum with 100 hours (10 days) of rigorous in-person training.
The Online Component: This in-depth curriculum is designed for the self-motivated student. You will delve into advanced medical concepts, pharmacology, and patient care protocols that go far beyond the WFR standard.
The In-Person Session: The 10-day practical session is an immersive experience focused on advanced skills. You'll practice everything from IV access to advanced airway management, all within the context of remote and austere environments. This is an accredited Washington State EMT course, and the training prepares you for the national certification exam.
Who it’s for: Individuals planning to work as medical practitioners on remote expeditions, industrial sites, or humanitarian missions. It is also ideal for outdoor professionals looking to achieve the next level of medical certification. Upon course completion, students are eligible to apply to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and subsequently pursue individual state licensure.
Our hybrid model is designed to empower you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be a capable provider in any environment. We look forward to seeing you online and in the field.
