KJ Clark is a Registered Nurse and former EMT with more than 12 years of combined experience in emergency medicine, critical care, and wilderness medicine. She spent seven years working as an EMT in wildland-urban interface settings, frequently operating alongside Search and Rescue teams to respond to emergencies in remote and technically challenging terrain. For the past five years, she has worked as an RN in both Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department settings, while also serving with the Mt. Baker Aid Room, providing mountain-based and remote medical support to recreators and responders in the field. Beyond her clinical work, KJ is deeply connected to the environments where wilderness medicine is practiced — bringing firsthand experience in whitewater paddling, mountain biking, and backcountry skiing to her role as an instructor. Her combination of frontline clinical expertise, extensive field experience, and genuine passion for the outdoors makes her a highly effective and relatable instructor for students at every level of wilderness medicine training.
The Journey to Remote Medicine
My path into remote medicine started while working as an EMT and climbing guide, combining emergency care with a passion for the outdoors. A defining experience came while I was in Nepal during the 2015 earthquake. Witnessing a large-scale natural disaster firsthand reinforced the importance of adaptability, teamwork when providing medical care in remote and resource-limited settings. That experience helped shape my continued work in wilderness and emergency medicine, eventually leading to roles in SAR-associated EMS, emergency nursing, and remote medical volunteer work.

Technically I don't own a car and I LOVE riding my bike all over Bellingham.
Teaching Philosopy
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the idea that doing is learning, and I focus on hands-on, scenario-based training that helps students build confidence, critical thinking, and practical skills through real-world experience.
Why I Choose to Teach
I teach because being outside is fun, and I enjoy helping people build the skills and confidence to understand risks, make good decisions, and recreate safely in remote environments.
