A Registered Nurse since 2019, Libby Feldhaus, brings a strong foundation of clinical expertise to their instruction, specializing primarily in cardiac and progressive patient care. Their passion for medicine is deeply rooted in the outdoors, having begun their medical training with the Mt. Baker Ski Patrol—an organization they proudly continue to serve today through the Mt. Baker Aid Room. Beyond the hospital setting, Libby has spent multiple seasons guiding sea-kayak expeditions in remote Alaska. This unique blend of high-acuity clinical experience and hands-on wilderness leadership allows Libby to expertly bridge the gap between traditional hospital medicine and the practical, austere medical concepts taught in their courses.
The Journey to Remote Medicine
My interest in medicine really began when I got involved with ski patrol. I only did that for a few years prior to going to nursing school, but doing medicine in that semi-remote environment really interested me. Once I had been a nurse for a few years, it was a big motivation for me to start splitting my time between the hospital and being outside. I grew this passion with guiding seasonally. This all felt like it naturally lead me to want to start teaching and getting involved with others who were interested in practicing in these remote environments.
Specialized Industries
Sea Kayak Guiding
Ski Patrol
I love being around dogs in any capacity, skiing, biking, trail running, long camping trips, and gardening when I'm outside. If I am forced to be inside I really enjoy pottery, knitting and baking.
Teaching Philosopy
My big goal is for students to leave a course and feel like they have more tools to solve problems they may face in remote environment. No situation is going to have a black and white answer; so I like to help people feel stronger in their situational awareness and critical thinking.
